Norwegian side Viking earn a famous 3-3 draw with ten-man Bayern

Viking FK stunned Bayern Munich with a 90th-minute equaliser at the Lyse Arena in Stavanger on Tuesday, holding the visitors to a 3-3 draw in their Champions League league-phase clash after Michael Olise’s red card left Bayern with ten men.

Bayern conceded inside two minutes for the second game running, after last week’s goal within seconds against Augsburg. Zlatko Tripic swung in a corner and Gianni Stensness rose above Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-jae to head past Jonas Urbig, stunning the visitors.

Bayern pushed hard for a reply, but Arild Ostbo, Viking’s 35-year-old goalkeeper, saved a Michael Olise free kick and efforts from Luis Diaz, Konrad Laimer and Harry Kane, while Joshua Kimmich shot off target from two yards in a frantic first half.

Viking struck again on the counter in the 38th minute. Erik Botheim threaded a perfectly weighted pass through, and Peter Christiansen outran an isolated Nathaniel Brown before finishing calmly into the bottom right corner for 2-0.

Vincent Kompany had seen enough at half-time, replacing Lennart Karl, Nathaniel Brown and Jonathan Tah with Ismael Saibari, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano after a poor first period in which Karl barely featured and the two defenders were tied to key mistakes.

Bayern pressed after the restart. A VAR check denied Kimmich a penalty, and Diaz found the side netting from Kimmich’s pass, before Laimer was fouled in the box. After a late VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot.

Harry Kane converted in the 54th minute for his 153rd goal in 156 games, pulling Bayern back to 2-1. Tom Bischof then drove a left-footed shot that Ostbo blocked superbly, a sign the visitors had found their rhythm.

Kane equalised around the hour, nodding in at the back post from Kimmich’s cross. Diaz appeared to give Bayern the lead moments later, but his goal was chalked off for offside, adding to a frustrating run for the Colombian.

Diaz did get his goal in the 71st minute. Kane’s lofted diagonal picked out the cutting Laimer, who squared for Diaz to finish from close range, handing Bayern a 3-2 lead and the Colombian a goal he badly needed.

Disaster struck in the 72nd minute. Michael Olise, booked for a professional foul, was shown a second yellow within a minute for tossing the ball at Tripic and hitting him in the face, the first red card of his career.

Viking sensed their chance and swarmed forward, mostly through set pieces. In the 90th minute a floated cross found substitute Herman Haugen, the academy right-back, at the back post, and he rose above Davies to head in the equaliser for 3-3.

The goal followed two Bayern errors in their own half, with Laimer and Kane both dispossessed and a possible foul in the build-up. It capped one of the most dramatic Champions League finishes in years and gave Viking a night they will long remember.
