Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning season is leading a fan poll to determine the greatest campaign by a multiple winner of football’s most prestigious individual award, reigniting debate over his rivalry with Lionel Messi.
The poll, hosted on the official Ballon d’Or platform, allows fans to vote multiple times, including for the same player, at a cost of one euro per vote.
Ronaldo’s 2008 season has received 62 percent of the votes, while Messi’s record-breaking 2012 campaign is second with 13 percent, according to figures reported by multiple outlets on Monday.
Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 after helping Manchester United secure the Premier League and Champions League titles. His performances that season established him among the world’s leading players.
Messi, meanwhile, scored 91 goals in 69 matches in 2012, setting a calendar-year record. The Argentine won his fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or that year.
Messi’s 2023 campaign, which followed Argentina’s World Cup triumph in Qatar, has received nine percent of the votes. Ronaldo’s 2007 season has seven percent, while his 2016 campaign has attracted two percent.
The poll features 10 multiple-time Ballon d’Or winners and asks fans to select the greatest individual season rather than their preferred player. Voting is scheduled to close at midnight on October 27.
Other players included in the poll are Brazilian Ronaldo Nazario, Marco van Basten, Michel Platini, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff and Alfredo Di Stefano.
