Messi’s signed Barca shirt, armband looted in Paris riots

Sports Desk

A Barcelona jersey and captain’s armband signed by Lionel Messi were stolen from a store in central Paris during the ongoing riots, according to a video circulating on social media.

The footage shows two hooded individuals holding up the items to the camera. The theft reportedly happened on Sunday during vandalism near Place de la Republique as unrest continued in the French capital, reported Spanish outlet Diario AS.

The incident comes ahead of the Champions League tie between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. Messi starred for both clubs during his career.

The value of the stolen Messi memorabilia is yet to be verified. Match-worn Messi shirts command huge sums in auctions. In 2023, six jerseys he wore during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar sold for over $1 million each, a record for football memorabilia.

The stolen pieces’ value will depend on the match in which they were worn, Messi’s performance that day, their condition and collector demand.

On the black market, the jersey and armband could fetch several thousand dollars if sold before being recovered. Their worth could rise considerably over time.

Around 2,000 people have reportedly been arrested during the unrest in France. Meanwhile, more than half a million people have joined peaceful demonstrations across the country.
