Paris St Germain, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan all won comfortably in the Champions League on Monday.
PSG thrashed Villarreal 6-0 after scoring four goals faster than any side in the competition, Bayern won 2-0 at Atletico Madrid, and Inter beat Feyenoord 3-0.
Stadiums across Europe fell silent before kick-off in memory of Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel, who died earlier that day.
PSG arrived unbeaten in 10 matches and without Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, both injured, but needed only nine minutes to take control. Joao Neves opened the scoring after a poor defensive play by Villarreal at Estadio de la Ceramica, and the hosts never recovered.
Desire Doue punished another mistake in the 12th minute, charging at goal to score the second, and Senny Mayulu added a third a minute later, leaving Villarreal overwhelmed inside a quarter of an hour and without an answer at the back.
Fabian Ruiz made it four in the 17th minute, 16 minutes and two seconds after kick-off, the fastest four goals in Champions League history according to Opta. PSG, the holders, had already scored 14 goals in three wins this season.
Villarreal’s supporters were leaving by the second half, which began with a first change from coach Inigo Perez. Ruiz added his second in the 50th minute from a Vitinha assist, and Matvey Safonov made a good save before PSG rested several starters.
David Boly, a 17-year-old prospect, came on and scored PSG’s sixth in the 78th minute, completing a 6-0 win. Mika Godts and Ferran Torres had come on, while Achraf Hakimi, Doue and Vitinha made way.
PSG remain top with 12 points, ahead of six teams on nine, while Villarreal sit 26th after a heavy defeat at La Ceramica.
Bayern Munich stayed unbeaten in the Champions League with a 2-0 win at Atletico Madrid, though the visitors needed until the second half to break through, and Manuel Neuer, at the other end, faced just one shot on target all night.
Lennart Karl, 18, had a first half to forget but broke the deadlock nine minutes after the restart. He took the ball off Robin le Normand and chipped it over Jan Oblak, who also tipped a deflected Dayot Upamecano shot onto the crossbar.
Konrad Laimer doubled the lead with a ferocious strike over Oblak into the roof of the net after Harry Kane picked him out in space. The England captain, back in Europe after winning the Ballon d’Or, could not add a goal himself.
Kane had scored in his previous 10 Champions League appearances and would have equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the longest Champions League scoring streak with a goal, but he shanked an acrobatic attempt wide and drilled a low strike off target.
Bayern remain unbeaten in the competition this season and face Lille on Wednesday, November 25, the same evening that Atletico meet Norwegian champions Viking, with PSG also due to face Roma that night.
Inter Milan were equally convincing in Rotterdam at De Kuip, beating Feyenoord 3-0. Yann Bisseck curled in the opener from long range, and Pio Esposito headed in the second before half-time, giving Inter control going into the break.
Piotr Zielinski completed the scoring from distance after the restart, wrapping up a comfortable 3-0 win for the Italian side on a night of lopsided scores across Europe.
