Bayern’s Neuer suffers partial foot tendon tear

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has suffered a partial tendon tear in his right foot, the German champions said on Sunday, a day after their 2-1 Bundesliga win at Mainz.

The club gave no timeframe for the 40-year-old’s return. German newspaper Bild reported the Bayern captain is expected to be sidelined for around two months.

Neuer went off shortly before halftime on Saturday after aggravating a foot problem. He had earlier become Bayern’s oldest-ever player, aged 40 years and 225 days, passing Bernd Dreher’s record.

The former Germany international had missed four matches with the injury before returning for Bayern’s 2-0 Champions League victory at Atletico Madrid earlier this week.

The setback comes amid fresh scrutiny of his form. Neuer nearly handed Mainz an equaliser with a first-half error on Saturday.

Last month, his mistake against Augsburg let Robin Fellhauer score the fastest goal in Bundesliga history, after eight seconds.

Bayern top the Bundesliga with 21 points from nine matches. They host Cologne on November 20.
