Heavy rains, waterlogging heighten dengue risk in Dhaka

Days of heavy rainfall and widespread waterlogging in the capital have heightened the risk of dengue, as stagnant water accumulates on roads, at construction sites and in residential areas, creating ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

The impact is becoming increasingly visible at the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute, where the dengue unit has reported a growing number of child patients in recent days.

Many children suffering from fever, weakness and other dengue symptoms have been admitted for treatment, as hospitals prepare for a seasonal rise in infections.

Bangladesh recorded two more dengue deaths and 327 fresh hospital admissions in the 24 hours until 8am on Tuesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

One death was reported in Dhaka South City Corporation, while the other was recorded in Chattogram division.

With the latest figures, the country’s dengue death toll has risen to 27 this year, while the total number of confirmed cases has reached 8,650.
