The Appellate Division's Chamber Court has stayed the bail granted to retired army member Hafizur Rahman in the murder case of Sohagi Jahan, also known as Tonu, a student of Comilla Victoria Government College, and ordered him to surrender within 24 hours.

Chamber Judge Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed the order on Thursday after hearing the state's petition challenging the bail granted by the High Court.

Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajal told journalists, "If Hafizur fails to surrender within this period, the police have been directed to arrest him."

According to the case details, Hafizur Rahman, 52, was in Comilla Central Jail. 

He is a former senior warrant officer of the Bangladesh Army. 

At the time of Tonu's murder in 2016, he was serving at Comilla Cantonment. 

He retired from the army in 2023. 

Police arrested him from his residence in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on April 21. 

The following day, before he was produced before the Comilla court in the afternoon, his DNA sample was collected that morning at the CID Forensic Laboratory in Dhaka.

On the evening of March 20, 2016, Tonu went to a house inside Comilla Cantonment to give private tuition but did not return home. 

After a search, her body was found in bushes near the cantonment power house. 

It was initially believed that she had been raped before being murdered. 

The following day, her father, Yar Hossain, an office assistant of the Cantonment Board (now retired), filed a murder case against unidentified accused at Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station.
