The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the dismissal of Dhaka University (DU) teacher Wasel Bin Sadat over allegations of sexually harassing a female student should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench of Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury and Justice AFM Saiful Karim issued the rule after the preliminary hearing of a writ petition.

Advocate Murad Hossain appeared for the petitioner during the hearing.

In August 2023, a student of BRAC University,alleged that she was sexually harassed by Wasel Bin Sadat when she went to his room to submit her thesis when he was serving as an external faculty member for a course at BRAC University.

According to the complaint, Professor Sadat behaved inappropriately when she went to meet him on August 15 regarding her thesis.

She alleged that he subjected her to verbal and physical harassment.

Following the allegation, the university authorities initially suspended Wasel.

He was later dismissed from his position on August 4, 2025.
