Disgruntled BNP youth leaders tell Mirza Fakhrul Jubo Dal is 'on the verge of collapse'

A group of around 35 disgruntled leaders excluded from Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) youth wing, Jubo Dal, met Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday, alleging that the once-powerful organization has become "virtually defunct" under its current leadership.

The leaders, who met Fakhrul for about 20 minutes at his Hare Road residence in Dhaka, also sought an opportunity to present a memorandum to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman outlining what they described as widespread organizational failures.

According to participants, the delegation accused the Jubo Dal leadership of centralizing decision-making in the hands of a single leader, sidelining dedicated and qualified activists while constituting the organization's full committee.

They alleged that internal discipline has deteriorated further since the Aug. 5, 2024 political change, citing arbitrary expulsions and reinstatements of members, disregard for former leaders and a growing culture of organizational indiscipline.

"The organization that was once the BNP's strongest affiliate is now on the verge of collapse," one participant told Fakhrul, according to leaders present at the meeting.

They warned that the absence of effective leadership and meaningful political activities could weaken the BNP itself if the situation is not addressed.

The delegation also criticized the recently announced 151-member full committee, alleging that many leaders who had actively participated in past anti-government movements were excluded, putting their political future at risk.

One leader alleged that a senior Jubo Dal leader routinely mistreats activists and frequently expels members over minor issues, creating widespread resentment within the organization.

The meeting was attended by several former Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal leaders, including former vice presidents, secretaries and central committee members.

Jubo Dal announced a six-member partial committee in July 2024 before unveiling a 151-member full committee on June 4 this year under President Abdul Monayem and General Secretary Nurul Islam Nayan.
