DUCSU VP Shadik Kayem announces departure from Shibir

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President (VP) Abu Shadik Kayem on Monday announced his formal departure from Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Shadik, who also served as the organisation’s central International Affairs Secretary, described his years with Chhatra Shibir as a “golden chapter” of his life in a Facebook post.

“The most beautiful and productive years of my life have been spent with this organisation”, he wrote.

He said his departure was part of the organisation’s regular process.

Shadik came to national prominence for his role as a coordinator of Students Against Discrimination during the July Uprising, which culminated in the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.

At the time, he was serving as president of Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University unit, a position that remained largely unknown because the organisation was unable to operate openly on campus due to opposition from the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and several other student organisations.

On September 9 last year, Shadik was elected the 38th Vice President of DUCSU. He defeated Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatradal (JCD) candidate Abidul Islam Khan by securing 14,042 votes, while Abidul received 5,708 votes.
