President Mohammed Shahabuddin is set to resign today, according to a highly placed source who confirmed the development to Daily Waadaa.

Two Bangabhaban sources also said representatives from the presidential residence were preparing to deliver his resignation letter to Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad later on Friday.

Speculation over Shahabuddin's departure had intensified after multiple media reports suggested he was preparing to leave office. Reuters reported on Thursday, citing three sources familiar with the matter, that the president had informed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman of his decision earlier this week and was expected to announce it on Friday.

The resignation follows reports that Shahabuddin spoke by phone with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina during a medical visit to London in May. Hasina has been living in exile in India since July 2024 after being ousted from power.

The leader said the political environment had become increasingly sensitive after Hasina recently announced plans to return to Bangladesh in December.

Reuters reported earlier this month that Hasina, who faces a death sentence in Bangladesh and whose Awami League's activities have been banned, intends to return from India with senior party leaders later this year to surrender to the authorities.
