NCP Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam has claimed in a Facebook post on Wednesday that police arrested National Citizen Party (NCP) Joint Member Secretary Gazi Salauddin Tanvir earlier in the day in connection with a case filed over a social media post about BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Sarjis said Salahuddin was arrested from Dhaka at around 4:00am in a case lodged by a senior leader of the Bogura district unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

"The senior BNP leader in Bogura filed a case against him, and today, on the anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, he was arrested from Dhaka at 4:00am," Sarjis wrote.

The arrest came after the NCP had already taken disciplinary action against Salahuddin over the same Facebook post.

The party temporarily relieved him of his responsibilities after he deleted the post, publicly apologised and assured that such an incident would not be repeated, Sarjis added.

Condemning the arrest, Sarjis alleged that the BNP and the police had acted despite the party's disciplinary measures.

He wrote that although Salahuddin had admitted his mistake, removed the post, apologised and faced internal disciplinary action, "even after all this, the BNP and Tarique Rahman's police showed their power."

This is not the first time Salahuddin has faced disciplinary action within the NCP.
