Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman has alleged that the government rejected the party’s proposals on energy and electricity despite Jamaat offering advice from its team of experts.

He made the remarks during an exchange of views with journalists at Sylhet Circuit House on Thursday afternoon.

Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat had formed a team of experts to provide recommendations on the country’s energy sector, but the government was unwilling to take their advice.

“The government was not willing to take advice from Jamaat’s expert team on energy. They also did not accept our plan regarding electricity,” he said.

Speaking about the country’s political situation over the past seven to seven-and-a-half months, the Jamaat chief said the current crisis was created because the government failed to honour what he described as the people’s mandate.

“Where do we see the country after seven or seven-and-a-half months? You see it the way I see it. The crisis was created from the very first day, and the government itself created it,” he said.

He alleged that the government initially indicated that it would accept the people’s verdict but later changed its position.

“They initially said they would accept it. They never said no in any way. They told us first that they would accept it. Now they are saying they will not,” he said.

Shafiqur Rahman said the change in position had contributed to the political uncertainty in the country.
