AL leader snatched from police custody in Chuadanga; 2 cops hurt

Two police personnel were injured when family members allegedly attacked them and snatched an Awami League leader from their custody during an arrest operation in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga on Wednesday night.

The police said the incident occurred when a team from Darshana Police Station went to Chandipur in Kurulgachhi Union around 9pm to arrest Abu Siddique, president of the Chandipur Ward unit of Awami League, which is facing a ban on its activities. Siddiq is also a union parishad member.

Police arrested Siddiq during the operation, but his family members allegedly attacked the officers and snatched him away while he was handcuffed.

Additional Superintendent of Police of the Damurhuda-Jibannagar Circle Md Nurullah said two police personnel were injured in the attack.

Police later arrested four people in connection with the incident. They were Lakkhan, son of Robi Haldar of Haldarpara in Chandipur; Firoz, son of Selim; Kona, wife of Sanchay; and Sonali, wife of Sanjit.

Darshana Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Muklesur Rahman said police were conducting drives to arrest the remaining accused.
