The National Citizen Party (NCP) has called for a mass protest demanding the resignation of the home and energy ministers, the dissolution of the ‘‘one-party’’ Constitution Amendment Committee, the formation of a Constitution Reform Council based on the public mandate expressed through the referendum, and the repeal of all “authoritarian laws”, including the cyber law.
The party announced the programme in a statement issued on Friday, saying the protest will be held in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh, Dhaka, at 3pm on October 30.
Later, on Friday, the Dhaka North and South units of the party distributed leaflets to mobilise support for the mass protest.
NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Asif Mahmud, the party’s mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation, Nasiruddin Patwary, its mayoral candidate for Dhaka South, and other central and metropolitan leaders attended the programme held in Karwan Bazar in the capital.
Addressing the programme as the chief guest, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said on the one hand, law and order is deteriorating, and crime, terrorism and drug trafficking cannot be contained.
Nahid said on the other hand, repression is being carried out against ordinary people and opposition parties.
“Our clear demand is that the home and energy ministers must resign immediately, taking responsibility for these overall failures”, he said.
On the Constitution Amendment Committee, Nahid said, “A one-party Constitution Amendment Committee has been formed to make a mockery of the people. It must be dissolved immediately, and a Constitution Reform Council must be formed based on the public mandate expressed through the referendum.”
