Yeasir Arafat to lead NCP’s media wing

The National Citizen Party (NCP) on Friday appointed Yeasir Arafat as its media secretary as part of a reshuffle of its central convening committee, which now has 195 members.

In his new role, Arafat will oversee the party’s communications with journalists and media outlets.

Arafat joined the NCP in February this year, about a month before the national election, bringing his nine-year journalism career to an end.

Since joining the party, he has handled media-related responsibilities at the central level while working to expand its political presence in his home district of Kushtia.

Before joining NTV in 2018, Arafat was one of the co-founders of Joban, an analytical magazine that was eventually shut down by the Awami League government. He later joined the daily Samakal in 2022.

Following the July uprising, Arafat helped establish the Bangladesh Free Press Initiative, bringing together at least two dozen journalists from mainstream media outlets. He resigned as convener of the organisation when he joined the NCP.

He is also a co-founder of July Memories, a digital archive documenting graffiti, songs, slogans and poems from the uprising. The website features photographs of around 10,000 pieces of graffiti collected from 11 districts across the country.
