Tarique Rahman holds power illegitimately like Hasina, has handed country to mafias: NCP’s Nahid

Says BNP government is anti-uprising, has reached understanding with AL

The BNP government is a government that runs counter to the mass uprising and has reached an understanding with the Awami League, alleged opposition chief whip and NCP convener Nahid Islam.

Speaking at a leaflet distribution and public outreach programme in the capital’s Jatrabari on Saturday, he also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, like deposed Sheikh Hasina, was holding power illegitimately and had handed the country over to mafias.

Saying there was no difference between the two, Nahid alleged that PM Tarique had cheated the martyrs of the uprising by denying the outcome of the referendum and hijacking the revolution.

The NCP chief warned that they were left with no option but to take to the streets to reclaim the movement.

Nahid also demanded an end to the “drama” being staged in the name of a constitution amendment committee.

He said a Constitution Reform Council must be formed in line with the referendum mandate. He also called for changes to the authoritarian laws passed in parliament and for justice for those killed in July.

Nahid acknowledged that the BNP was part of the uprising and that many Chhatra Dal leaders were injured or killed. However, he alleged that the party’s political leaders had compromised with the Awami League for the past 16–17 years and had no real desire for change.

Recalling the referendum held alongside the 2026 election, he said everyone had voted “Yes” together, which the NCP had described as a symbol of change and reform. He alleged that the BNP, as soon as it came to power, disregarded the July Charter and denied the referendum, “reducing the aspirations of July to dust” and returning Bangladesh to the old order.

Pointing to the law and order situation, Nahid cited the attack on and vandalism of singer Asif Akbar’s car earlier that morning. He said citizens from any walk of life had no security in the country and that the government and the home minister had completely failed to ensure it.

“This terror and anarchy cannot continue,” he said.

Presenting a set of demands, Nahid said the home minister must resign as the first step towards restoring law and order, as it was impossible to do so while he remained in office. He also demanded that the energy minister resign, taking responsibility for failures in the energy sector.
