Indian MP Owaisi warns of street protests after alleging Muslim voter names being deleted

Waadaa Desk

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has accused BJP activists of attempting to remove Muslim voters from electoral rolls through Form 7 during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), warning of protests in Hyderabad larger than those recently held in Delhi and Mumbai, The Economic Times reports.

Addressing a gathering late Saturday night, Owaisi urged the Election Commission and Telangana’s Chief Electoral Officer to investigate alleged attempts to delete voters’ names through Form 7, an application used to object to the inclusion or seek deletion of a name from an electoral roll.

Owaisi claimed that the names of people submitting Form 7 applications were not being disclosed. He alleged that a BJP booth-level agent in Musheerabad, Hyderabad, had submitted an application seeking the removal of Muslim voters’ names.

“BJP and Sangh Parivar people want to get names deleted by submitting Form 7,” Owaisi said, urging Electoral Registration Officers to scrutinise every Form 7 application and establish who had submitted it.

He said the Election Commission should take action if false applications were being filed.

“If this drama does not stop, remember, we will do the ‘mantar’, that was not read at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, on the streets of Hyderabad,” Owaisi said.

He warned that AIMIM workers would question officials over the Form 7 applications and said Hyderabad could witness protests “double, triple” the size of those held in Delhi and Mumbai.

“We cannot tolerate all names of genuine voters being deleted through Form 7 just because they are Muslims,” he said.

Owaisi also criticised the SIR exercise, calling it a “wrong exercise”, while acknowledging that the Supreme Court had ruled in its favour.

He alleged that the exercise could eventually lead to questions over people’s citizenship and create conditions for an NRC in the future. Referring to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and RSS leader Sunil Ambekar, Owaisi said both had spoken in favour of conducting an NRC.

He also rejected allegations that AIMIM wins elections through bogus votes, saying the party wins through voters’ support.

Responding to Owaisi’s allegations, Telangana BJP chief spokesperson N V Subash said the AIMIM leader should take the legal route if he has evidence of electoral malpractice.

“If Owaisi has concrete evidence of electoral malpractice, what is stopping him from approaching the appropriate judicial forum?” Subash said.

He argued that serious allegations against a constitutional authority cannot be established through public statements alone and urged Owaisi to present any evidence before the competent authorities.

“Political rhetoric cannot become a substitute for proof, and allegations cannot be allowed to become electoral facts merely by repetition,” Subash said.

The BJP spokesperson also said allegations concerning electoral rolls in Hyderabad should be subjected to scrutiny through the same legal process.
