The Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF) has permanently banned athletes Jannat Begum and Kabita Roy from the women's category and cancelled their medals and national records, after medical tests found excess male hormones in their bodies.

Bangladesh Army athlete Jannat and Bangladesh Navy athlete Kabita were referred for testing after their respective organisations raised complaints over their sex. Bangladesh Medical University formed a five-member expert medical board on September 10 to examine them.

The board completed its examinations on May 11 and submitted its final report on May 16. It found both athletes had 46,XY Differences of Sex Development, penoscrotal hypospadias, and gonads located in the inguinal canals.

Jannat, 28, had a testosterone level of 19.66 nmol/L, and Kabita, 19, recorded 16.50 nmol/L — both far above World Athletics' 2.5 nmol/L limit for female competitors, which athletes must stay under for 24 months.

BAF's Executive Committee took the ban decision unanimously at its second meeting on Saturday.

Jannat loses eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals, including two national records in javelin and discus throw. Kabita loses one gold, one silver and two bronze medals from the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.

The vacated medals will be redistributed to the next-placed athletes. Both banned athletes can challenge the decision.
