Japanese karate legend Katsutoshi Shiina will visit Bangladesh in September to lead a six-day training camp in Dhaka and Chattogram, organisers said.

Shiina, an eighth-dan instructor and technical director of the Japan Karate Association (JKA), will conduct a three-day camp in Dhaka from September 2-4 before travelling to Chattogram for another three days from September 5-7.

The Dhaka camp will be held at Emmanuelle’s Convention Center at Shimanto Square in Dhanmondi, while the Chattogram sessions will take place at the Rifle’s Club.

The Japanese instructor will provide intensive technical training and conduct sessions for karate practitioners as part of the JKA Annual Camp 2026.

Shiina, 65, began karate as an elementary school student and entered the JKA instructor-training programme in 1986. He has since held senior positions within the organisation and taught karate in several countries across Asia, Europe and North America.

He won the JKA All Japan Kumite Championship three times, in 1991, 1993 and 1994, and later won the JKA All Japan Kata Championship in 2001 and 2004.

Shiina also won the men’s kata title at the 9th Shoto World Cup in Tokyo in 2004. He previously claimed bronze medals in kumite and kata at the 1994 and 2000 Shoto World Cups respectively.

His Bangladesh visit will give local karateka an opportunity to train directly under one of the senior figures of Japanese Shotokan karate.
