Sprinters Imranur Rahman and Shirin Akter completed sprint doubles on Sunday by winning the men's and women's 200m gold medals respectively on the final day of the Koko 18th National Summer Athletics Championships at the National Stadium in Dhaka.
Representing the Navy, Imranur clocked 21.18 seconds to win the men's 200m title. Shirin, meanwhile, set a national record in the women's 200m, clocking 24.35 seconds to claim gold.
“It's double joy! The feeling is amazing,” Imranur told reporters after his victory in the 200m event.
“I participated in this event mainly as part of training, to see how it goes. I tried it in a casual and fun manner. Whatever the result has been, Alhamdulillah, I am quite satisfied with it. I intend to do better with better training in the future.”
It was Imranur’s second victory in the event at the national level, following his maiden triumph at the National Athletics Championships at Banani Army Stadium in 2022.
The England-based sprinter also helped the Navy win gold in the 4x100m relay, earning the best male sprinter award.
Both athletes had won the 100m titles on the opening day of the three-day competition, which saw nine national records broken.
Bangladesh Army topped the medal table with 21 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze medals, re-establishing their supremacy. Bangladesh Navy finished second with 18 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze medals.
Navy athlete Priya Akter was named the best female athlete of the championships after winning three gold medals in the 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m events.
Priya also set national records in the 1,500m and 3,000m events.
