Pakistan’s powerful army chief Asim Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Monday as Islamabad stepped up efforts to mediate an end to the conflict between Iran and the United States.

Iranian state television reported the meeting. It came after US President Donald Trump spoke with Munir last week, according to a US source familiar with the matter who spoke to AFP on Monday.

Pakistan has played a key role in efforts to end the conflict, brokering a memorandum of understanding in June. However, peace negotiations currently appear stalled.

Munir also held separate meetings in Tehran with Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, as well as Mohsen Rezaei, head of the country’s highest national security body, Iranian state television reported.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that Munir’s visit was part of “Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to help consolidate peace and security in the region”.

The visit came as the United States intensified economic pressure on Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday announced plans for the “economic asphyxiation” of Iran, expanding Washington’s secondary sanctions and warning of serious consequences for countries that refuse to join the campaign.
