Venezuela quake death toll surpasses 6,500

BSS

Venezuela’s interim government on Monday raised the death toll from the powerful twin earthquakes that struck the South American country exactly two months ago to 6,509.

The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck on June 24, devastating the coastal state of La Guaira, where at least 190 buildings collapsed.

The previous death toll stood at 6,438.

Rescue teams are continuing efforts to recover bodies from the rubble in La Guaira, where thousands of people left homeless by the earthquakes are living in makeshift camps.

The interim government has not disclosed how many people remain missing following the disaster.

Authorities said they have provided 335 homes to earthquake victims, against a pledge to provide 4,000 homes by the end of the year.
