US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the strategically important Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” while claiming that the United States is winning its ongoing war with Iran.

Speaking at a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, Trump said oil prices would fall once the US “wins” the war with Iran, which he said is currently underway.

“Oil prices will be going down as soon as we win the war with Iran,” Trump said, adding, “We’ll win it.”

Trump also claimed that the US now controls the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

“I think we should call the Hormuz Strait, we should call it the Trump Strait. I should get something out of it,” he said.

According to CNN, Trump went on to mock the potential reaction from Iran’s leadership, saying: “It’s going to be called — ladies and gentlemen, I’ll have an announcement — we’ll call it the Trump Strait, and I’m sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that.”

The remarks come as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with the Strait of Hormuz continuing to be a major flashpoint because of its importance to global energy supplies.

Trump’s comments also appeared to combine a claim of US military control over the waterway with a characteristically provocative proposal to attach his own name to one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime passages.
