At least 16 people, including 11 civilians and five police officers, have been killed after a vehicle carrying explosives rammed into a mosque in Pakistan’s north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, BBC reports, citing a senior police official in Peshawar.

The attack took place in Kohat district, where an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and security forces was still ongoing, according to police.

One of the assailants was killed by police, an officer said.

A rescue operation was under way at the scene, while local media reported that the death toll could rise.

Authorities have yet to provide further details about the attackers or the motive behind the assault.
