Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “war criminal” while reaffirming Doha’s commitment to diplomatic and mediation efforts in the region, Middle East Eye reported on Wednesday.
In an interview with Piers Morgan, Al Thani was asked whether he considered Netanyahu a war criminal.
“Of course. What’s been committed in Gaza is war crimes, and whoever is responsible for this is a war criminal,” he said.
The Qatari prime minister cited attacks on civilian infrastructure in Gaza, saying hospitals and schools had been targeted.
“Whatever the justifications and the arguments, nothing is justifying this,” he added.
Al Thani also referred to Israel’s attack on Qatar in September last year, when Israeli forces targeted Hamas officials in Doha while Qatar was engaged in mediation efforts.
“We were attacked by Israel while we were mediating,” he said, adding that Netanyahu had “crossed the line” as he had done on previous occasions.
Despite the escalating tensions in the region, Al Thani said Qatar would continue its diplomatic efforts and seek to facilitate a solution.
“We are trying to do our best to give the best advice to the US government on how to reach a solution, as well as to the Iranians,” he said.
