Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has claimed victory over Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s US Senate race, potentially making history as the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate, Al Jazeera reports.

Addressing supporters as votes were still being counted, El-Sayed declared, “Michigan, we did it.”

He later reiterated his claim, telling supporters, “We won.”

The Michigan race saw a closely watched contest between El-Sayed and Rogers, with the outcome marking a potential milestone for Muslim representation in American politics.

If confirmed, El-Sayed's victory would make him the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate.
