Updated on

A mild earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale shook Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh on Monday night, causing brief panic among residents but with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Earthquake Observation and Research Center, the tremor struck at 9:28:54 p.m. local time.

The department initially reported Dhaka as the epicenter but later revised the location to Mortujabad in Bhulta Union of Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj district, about 16 kilometers east of Agargaon in the capital.

Rubaiyat Kabir, an official at the meteorological department's Earthquake Observation and Research Center, confirmed the updated epicenter location to Daily Agamir Shomoy.

The earthquake was felt across Dhaka and in several districts nationwide, prompting many residents to leave buildings as a precaution.

The tremor was also confirmed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which recorded a magnitude of 4.0.

According to data from the My Earthquake Alerts platform, the quake occurred at a depth of approximately 15.9 kilometers (9.9 miles).

Bangladesh, situated near several active tectonic fault lines, experiences periodic seismic activity. The latest tremor comes less than two weeks after a magnitude 4.5 earthquake was felt in parts of Sylhet, Mymensingh and other regions on June 12.

Authorities said they were monitoring the situation, while no significant damage or injuries had been reported immediately after the quake.
