Dreams of studying in Australia cut short as IUB student dies in Dhaka road crash

A university student who was preparing to leave for Australia for higher education died in a road accident in Dhaka's Fakirapool area just days before his scheduled departure.

The deceased was identified as Arafat Rahman Shawon, 19, son of Md Lutfor Rahman, and a first-year BBA student at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).

Shawon hailed from Baro Deora Ansar Ali Road area in Gazipur.

He used to live with his family in the Madhubagh area of Moghbazar in Dhaka.

His mother, Sultana Akter, said her son was preparing to pursue higher studies in Australia and his flight to Australia was scheduled for June 30.

"He went out on a motorcycle with friends to watch a football match at night. While passing through Fakirapool around 12am, a motorcycle ran into my son. He suffered severe injuries to his head, face, and other parts of his body," she said.

He was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead, she said.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at the DMCH, said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue.

A pedestrian who was also injured in the incident received treatment at the emergency department.
