Four killed, one missing as landslide hits Rohingya camp in Ukhiya
Four people, including three members of the same family, were killed and another remains missing after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck the Jamtoli Rohingya Camp-15 in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.
The incident occurred at around 3 am on Monday in Block D of the camp, following days of continuous rain.
According to local sources, persistent rainfall had loosened the hillside, causing a large section of earth to collapse onto several shelters while residents were asleep. Several people were trapped under the debris, triggering panic across the camp.
Local residents immediately launched a rescue effort before informing the camp authorities and the Ukhiya Fire Service.
Multiple units of the Ukhiya Fire Service rushed to the scene and, with assistance from camp officials and volunteers, began rescue operations. After hours of efforts, rescuers recovered the bodies of a woman and a child from beneath the rubble.
Two of the victims were identified as Humayara Begum and Anas. The identities of the other two victims could not be immediately confirmed. One more member of the same family remains missing, and rescue operations are continuing.
Ukhiya Fire Service Station Master Dollar Tripura told Daily Waadaa two bodies had been recovered by firefighters and that the search for the missing person was still underway.
Camp officials said the risk of landslides has increased significantly across the hilly areas of the Rohingya camps due to the ongoing heavy rains. Efforts are underway to relocate families living on vulnerable slopes to safer areas.
Landslides and waterlogging are recurring hazards in the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf during the monsoon season. Authorities have urged camp residents to remain vigilant and avoid staying in high-risk areas.
