Magistrate appointed to exhume remains of Salman Shah

Updated on

A judicial magistrate has been appointed to oversee the exhumation of the remains of celebrated actor Salman Shah from his grave in Sylhet as part of an ongoing murder investigation.

Sylhet Additional District Magistrate Pinki Saha issued an order on 22 June appointing Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Parvez to supervise the exhumation, in compliance with an order passed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on 24 May.

A copy of the appointment order was forwarded to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Sunday.

The exhumation will be conducted under Section 176(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, in connection with Ramna Model Police Station Case No. 18 (10)25 under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code, with the aim of determining the exact cause of Salman Shah's death, said Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's General Registration Wing for Ramna Police Station.

The order follows a petition by the investigation officer, CID Inspector Ziaul Morshed, seeking permission to exhume the remains of the actor, whose real name was Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon, conduct an inquest and carry out a post-mortem examination in the presence of an executive magistrate.

On 24 May, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana approved the application.

However, on 23 June, the same court accepted for hearing a petition filed by Salman Shah's maternal uncle, Mohammad Alamgir (Kumkum), seeking to revoke the earlier order permitting the exhumation.

The murder investigation stems from a case filed by Alamgir on 21 October 2025 with Ramna Police Station, accusing 11 people, including Salman Shah's wife Samira Haque, of involvement in the actor's death under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code. The other accused are Aziz Mohammad Bhai, Latifa Haque Lusi, actor Dawn, David, Zaved, Faruk, Ruby, A Sattar, Saju and Rijvi Ahmed Farhad.

A day earlier, on 20 October 2025, the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka, Md Jannatul Ferdous Ibn Haque, directed the officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station to register the matter as a murder case and submit a report. The court also cancelled the earlier unnatural death (UD) case, overturning an order issued on 31 October 2021.
