Bandarban closes all tourist spots as torrential rain triggers floods, landslide fears

Updated on

Authorities have shut all tourist attractions in Bandarban until July 10 after two days of torrential rain triggered flash floods, disrupted transport links and raised the risk of landslides across the hill district.

The district administration announced the closure in an emergency notice issued late Monday, saying the measure was taken to protect tourists and residents from weather-related hazards.

The order bars access to all tourist destinations, waterfalls, hill trails, waterways and other high-risk areas, while urging tour operators and the public to avoid travel until conditions improve.

Heavy rain has already inundated low-lying areas in Thanchi and Alikadam upazilas. A boat capsized in the Tindu area of Thanchi on Monday after being swept away by a mountain stream, though no casualties were reported. Residents in Alikadam said floodwaters had submerged homes and damaged crops.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department warned that a monsoon low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of Chattogram, Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions over the next 72 hours. It also warned of possible landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram Division.

In Chattogram city, 330.8 millimetres of rain fell in the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. Tuesday, inundating roads and neighbourhoods across the city.

Water levels reached knee- to waist-deep in several areas, flooding homes and shops and causing widespread disruption for commuters. Several educational institutions suspended classes and examinations because of the downpour.
