6 rivers flow above danger level as heavy rainfall continues

Water levels at 10 monitoring stations on six rivers across Bangladesh were flowing above the danger level on Thursday morning, while a further seven stations remained at the warning level, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board.

The FFWC released the latest river level data at 9am.

According to the update, the Sangu River was flowing 142cm above the danger level at Bandarban station and 14cm above at Dohazari station.

On the Matamuhuri River, water levels stood 154cm above the danger level at Lama station and 49cm above at Chiringa station.

The Kushiyara River was flowing 11cm above the danger level at Markuli station, while the Manu River was 55cm above the danger level at both the Manu Rail Bridge and Moulvibazar stations.

The Dhalai River at Kamalganj station was 33cm above the danger level. On the Khowai River, water levels were 220cm above the danger level at Balla station and 115cm above at Habiganj station.

FFWC Executive Engineer Sarder Udoy Raihan told Daily Waadaa, "The areas currently affected by flooding are not expected to experience prolonged inundation. We expect the overall flood situation to begin improving after the next 48 hours."

The FFWC also reported that water levels had reached the warning level at Dalia, Kaunia and Tarapur stations on the Teesta River; Fenchuganj and Sherpur stations on the Kushiyara River; and Kalmakanda and Laurergarh stations on the Someswari River.

According to the centre, the highest rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours was 224mm in Cherrapunji, India. During the same period, the highest rainfall recorded in Bangladesh was 298.5mm in Chattogram.
