Rohingya woman killed, child injured in landslide at Refugee camp

A Rohingya refugee woman has been killed and a three-year-old child has been injured in a landslide at a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.

The incident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. on Monday in Camp 8 East in Ukhiya Upazila. 

A section of earth collapsed onto a shelter located on a hillside, resulting in the casualties.

The deceased was identified as Bibi Hafsa (18). 

Local residents rescued the child and took him to a hospital for treatment.

Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atikur Rahman said the body of the woman has been recovered and sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

A series of landslides and weather related events killed at least 15 Rohingya refugees and displaced more than 9,700 people in the squalid camps in Cox’s Bazar earlier this month as UNHCR reported.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) recently said the deadly landslides in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar were not simply the result of heavy monsoon rains, but also of longstanding policy failures, overcrowding, and funding shortages.
