Bangladesh, Russia discuss expanding cooperation in energy sector

Bangladesh and Russia on Wednesday discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, as the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening longstanding ties.

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov led their respective delegations at a bilateral meeting held in Manila, the Philippines, according to a Foreign Ministry press release.

Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir accompanied Khalilur at the meeting.

During the talks, the two sides reviewed ongoing Bangladesh-Russia cooperation, with particular emphasis on collaboration in the energy sector. They also exchanged views on expanding cooperation in other areas of mutual interest.

Lavrov congratulated Khalilur on his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Russian foreign minister also welcomed the formation of the Bangladesh-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group, describing it as a positive step towards institutionalising parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral engagement and advance the longstanding partnership through continued cooperation.
