SUST suspends two JCD leaders over assault on student

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has suspended two leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) for four semesters following the assault of a student who had complained about the quality of food served at a university dormitory.

The decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting on Tuesday, according to a university press release.

In addition to the suspension, the university barred the two students from entering or staying on campus for the next two years.

The suspended students are Hasibur Rahman, a Political Studies student and communication secretary of the JCD's SUST unit, and Tarek Rahman, a Statistics student and assistant office secretary of the same unit. Both are residential students of Shah Paran Hall.

Earlier on Sunday, the JCD removed both leaders from their organisational posts for allegedly violating party discipline.

Professor Jahir Bin Alam said the syndicate made the decision based on the recommendations of the university's investigation and disciplinary committees.

The incident took place on July 18, when Khairul Khandakar, a 2023–24 session student of the Sociology Department and a resident of Shah Paran Hall, was assaulted in front of the university's main gate after raising concerns about the quality of food served at the hall mentioning the Provost in its WhatsApp group.

The assault sparked protests by students, who demanded justice for their fellow student.
