Six rescued after tourist boat sinks in Thanchi's Sangu River; one remains missing

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has rescued six people alive after a tourist boat carrying seven passengers capsized in the Sangu River in the Boro Pathor area of Thanchi upazila in Bandarban. A coordinated rescue operation, led by the BGB, is continuing to search for one missing tourist.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:21 pm on July 24, when a tourist boat carrying seven people overturned in the Boro Pathor area, under the jurisdiction of the Tendumukh BGB Camp of Bolipara Battalion (38 BGB), due to the river's strong current. 

A BGB patrol team travelling from Remakri to Thanchi immediately launched a rescue operation and successfully pulled six people to safety, including four tourists, the boatman and the tour guide. However, one tourist remains missing.

The missing tourist has been identified as Md Jawad Ul Islam Mahiyan (24), son of Md Helal Uddin and Mst Delowara Akter, from Maskanda village in Mymensingh.

Since the incident, four special BGB patrol teams have been conducting search operations in the Sangu River. Local public representatives, the boatman, the tour guide and local residents have also joined the rescue effort.

To strengthen the operation, the BGB has coordinated with the Thanchi Fire Service. However, as the local fire service unit does not have divers, it has been unable to carry out an underwater search. 

A specialised diving team from the Chattogram Fire Service has been dispatched to the scene and will begin a detailed underwater search upon arrival.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said it is giving the highest priority to locating the missing tourist and is continuing the rescue operation without interruption.
