HC asks why extra service charges by MFS should not be declared illegal

The High Court has issued a rule asking why the excessive service charges imposed on customers by mobile financial services (MFS) providers bKash, Nagad, and Rocket should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional, and contrary to the law.

The High Court bench of Justice Md. Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice Md. Rezaul Karim issued the rule on Sunday.

The Finance Secretary, the Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, and other relevant authorities have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

The rule also seeks to know why a separate Mobile Financial Services Act should not be enacted to ensure regulation of MFS service charges, consumer protection, and accountability. 

Advocate Obaidullah Al Mamun Sakib argued the case on behalf of the petition in court. Earlier, the lawyer himself had filed the writ petition.
