Law firm to seek cancellation of Benazir’s UAE bail, says Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said the government has instructed the concerned in the United Arab Emirates to seek cancellation of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed's bail after learning that he had been released from custody in Dubai.

"I got to know that he (Benazir) has been granted bail on condition of not leaving the UAE", Salahuddin told the reporters after a meeting with police officers in Rajshahi..

"I talked to the Home Secretary, he talked to our ambassador to the UAE. The concerned law firm has been instructed to pursue the cancellation of bail," the home minister added.

The minister's remarks came after Daily Waadaa confirmed through multiple sources that Benazir, who is facing several corruption and money-laundering cases in Bangladesh, had been released on conditional bail in Dubai.

A UAE court granted his bail application on July 27, and he was released from custody on July 30 after legal formalities were completed.

According to sources familiar with the proceedings, Benazir's passport remains in the custody of the court, while Bangladesh continues efforts to bring the former police chief back to face trial in the corruption cases filed against him.
