Govt describes claims of higher electricity bills as ‘propaganda’, warns of 'strict legal action'
The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Monday alleged that some individuals and groups have been spreading propaganda about unusually high electricity bills in recent months.
“The Power Division strongly condemns these claims,” the ministry said in a Facebook post.
According to the post, all complaints received so far regarding excessive electricity bills have already been addressed by the Power Division and the relevant electricity distribution agencies.
The division also warned that anyone found spreading false information about excessive electricity bills without evidence would face “strict legal action.”
It urged customers with complaints to submit applications along with supporting evidence to the relevant authorities.
“Appropriate and effective action will be taken in response to such complaints,” the post said.
In recent months, customers across different parts of the country have reported receiving unusually high electricity bills.
Some consumers claim that their electricity bills have surged significantly despite frequent load-shedding and without the installation of any new electrical appliances.
