Mahfuj Alam accuses India of conspiring against Bangladesh over Hasina's New Delhi press conference

One of key leaders of the July Uprising and former adviser to Bangladesh's interim government Mahfuj Alam on Wednesday accused India of conspiring against Bangladesh after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina held her first press conference in New Delhi since leaving office in 2024.

The press conference came despite Dhaka's repeated objections to New Delhi over providing Hasina a political platform while she faces multiple cases in Bangladesh. A Bangladeshi court has sentenced her to death in one of those cases, and the government has been seeking her extradition from India.

In a Facebook post, Mahfuj alleged that India had allowed Hasina and the Awami League to use its territory to conspire against Bangladesh.

"India has given Hasina and her terrorist outfit BAL a podium to conspire against Bangladesh. This is a sign of India's meticulous plan to destabilize Bangladesh and a clear political and diplomatic misadventure to jeopardize Bangladesh's sovereignty and national security," he wrote.

Mahfuj further alleged that India could not avoid responsibility for "conspiring against Bangladesh and its people."

He said Bangladesh wanted a strong bilateral relationship with India based on "mutual respect and dignity," but added that such ties should come with recognition of the July Uprising and the exclusion of the Awami League from the country's future political course.
