Teesta flows 13cm above danger level in Lalmonirhat

The Teesta River was flowing 13 centimetres above the danger level at the Dalia point of the Teesta Barrage in Nilphamari on Wednesday morning as continuous rainfall and upstream hill runoff caused the water level to rise sharply.

Shunil Kumar, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Lalmonirhat, said the water level was recorded at 9:00am.

As the river continued to swell, water began entering low-lying houses and agricultural land along its banks, he said.

However, no major financial losses are expected as there are currently no significant seasonal crops in the affected fields, the official said.

The BWDB said water levels in rivers across the northern region may continue to rise over the next 48 hours due to heavy rainfall and upstream inflows, potentially triggering minor flooding in low-lying areas.

All necessary preparations have been taken to respond to any flood-related situation, it said.
