Three found killed inside Sylhet city home; police probe robbery, enmity

Updated on

An elderly couple and their domestic worker were found killed inside their home in Sylhet city on Wednesday morning, in a triple killing that police said may have stemmed from robbery or previous enmity.

The victims were identified as businessman Abdus Sattar Mia, 90, his wife Suraiya Begum, 75 and their domestic worker, aged around 25. Police recovered the three bodies from the couple's home, Mitali 111, in the Raynagar residential area.

The bodies showed signs of injuries around the neck, according to information gathered at the scene.

The couple had four children, two living in the United Kingdom and two in the United States, according to relatives.

A relative told Daily Waadaa that Sattar had spoken to family members over the phone at around 9 am, suggesting the killings occurred sometime afterward.

Mainul Zakir, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said police went to the house after receiving information about the deaths and recovered the bodies.

"We are investigating the matter," he said.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sarwar Murshed Shamim also visited the scene and said investigators were examining several possible motives.

"It might have happened due to robbery or previous enmity," Shamim said, adding that police had collected documents and other material from the house. "After the investigation, we can say what was the main reason behind the killing."

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday afternoon.

The killings add to concerns over violent crime in Sylhet. According to Sylhet Metropolitan Police data reported by local newspaper Shyamal Sylhet, 25 killings were recorded within the metropolitan area between August 2024 and August 2025. More than 500 people were named as accused in those cases and over 50 were arrested, according to the report.

Sylhet has also recorded several high-profile killings this year. In May, police arrested a man over the killing of a four-year-old girl in Sylhet Sadar, while a Rapid Action Battalion member was killed in a separate incident in the city's Topkhana area later that month.
