The foundation stone of the Laldia Container Terminal at Chattogram Port will be laid on August 30, Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges and Railways Sheikh Rabiul Alam said on Thursday.

The terminal will be developed as a modern, environment-friendly “green terminal” with cooperation from Denmark, he said at a meeting with a delegation from Denmark-based APM Terminals at the Shipping Ministry this morning.

Rabiul said the terminal will use the latest technologies, including remotely operated cranes controlled from offices, to enhance operational efficiency and ensure greater safety.

He also said the project will ensure women’s active participation, creating new opportunities for inclusive employment in the port sector.

The international-standard terminal is expected to significantly expand the capacity of Chattogram Port, while contributing to job creation, the growth of trade and commerce, and further strengthening the national economy, the minister said.

During the meeting, Rabiul praised Denmark’s socio-economic development and technological advancement and sought greater cooperation from the Danish government and Danish investors in developing and modernising Bangladesh’s port infrastructure.

Bangladesh currently offers a favourable environment for foreign investment and has significant investment potential in the port and shipping sectors, he said, assuring foreign investors of maximum government support.

Members of the APM Terminals delegation thanked the government for providing opportunities for investment and cooperation in developing Bangladesh’s port and terminal infrastructure.

Shipping Secretary Zakaria, the chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, senior ministry officials and the chief executive officer of APM Terminals were present at the meeting.
