Female engineer dies after scarf, hair become entangled in generator in Ukhiya

A female engineer died after her scarf and hair became entangled in a generator while she was inspecting work at a hospital in a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred around 10:30 am on Monday, August 24, at a hospital operated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Block A/11 of Rohingya Camp 3 in Ukhiya.

The victim, Farhana Haque, 29, was a resident of Uttara in Dhaka. She worked as a senior field engineer for IOM.

According to police and other relevant sources, Farhana arrived at the hospital in Camp 3 around 9:30 am to inspect ongoing work.

At around 10:20 am, while conducting the inspection, her scarf became caught in a generator. Her hair was subsequently entangled in the machine, leaving her critically injured.

Doctors at the hospital provided her with initial treatment. As her condition deteriorated, they advised that she be transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Police said she died while being taken there.

Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atiqur Rahman said: “While inspecting the work, the woman was seriously injured after her scarf and hair became entangled in a generator. She later died on the way to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Her body has been kept at the morgue. The incident is being investigated.”

Police said they were investigating how the accident occurred. Investigators are also examining whether the generator had been installed and operated with adequate safety measures.
