Sindurmati Dighi in Lalmonirhat to be developed as religious, tourist centre: Minister

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said that Lalmonirhat's traditional pilgrimage site and historical Sindurmati Dighi will be developed as an attractive religious and tourist centre with modern facilities.

The minister said Sindurmati Dighi is not only a historical place but also an important pilgrimage site for followers of the Sanatan religion from across the region and has been so for hundreds of years.

“Although the traditional site has become dilapidated due to long-term neglect, it remains closely associated with local history, folklore and the deep religious sentiments of devotees,” he said.

He said this while talking to reporters after inspecting the ongoing development work at Sindurmati Dighi and along its banks in Sindurmari village of Panchagram Union under Sadar Upazila of Lalmonirhat district on Thursday afternoon.

Mentioning the development work while ensuring that the traditional character of the Dighi remains completely intact, he said that devotees and tourists from different parts of the country would be able to perform religious rituals and take a holy bath there without any difficulty.

However, due to early rains this season, the pace of the work has slowed somewhat, and it has not been possible to complete the work entirely.

“The development work will resume in full swing at the end of October or in November,” he said.

The development of Sindurmati Dighi will not be limited to general infrastructure work; in addition to ensuring facilities for the religious activities of devotees, equal importance will be given to enhancing the site's aesthetic appeal and improving its environment.

He expressed hope that once the work in the area is completed, it will emerge as one of the country's most prominent religious and tourist destinations.

Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mononita Das, Sadar Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Shamsur Rahman, District BNP Joint General Secretary ABM Faruk Siddique, leaders and activists of local BNP and its associate organisations, and dignitaries from the Sanatan community accompanied the minister during the visit.
