Teacher’s death during mugging attempt: Three put on remand

A Dhaka court on Monday placed on a five-day remand three suspects arrested in connection with the murder of a government primary school headteacher during an alleged bag-snatching attempt near the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Siddiq Azad passed the order after Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Sub-Inspector Shahin, also the investigation officer of the case filed over the incident, sought 10 days’ remand for the accused.

The accused are Md Poni alias Poni Gazi, Cedric Julian and Rakib Hossain.

Rapid Action Battalion members arrested the trio, along with the alleged stolen goods, in a drive on Sunday.

Ranjina Parvin, headteacher of Bagbari Balika Government Primary School in Bogura, died on Saturday after falling from a rickshaw during an attempted bag snatching near the South Plaza of the Parliament Complex.

Police said she came to Dhaka from Bogura for medical treatment. Around 6:30am, two individuals in a motorbike allegedly tried to snatch her bag while she was travelling by rickshaw, causing her to fall and suffer a severe head injury.

She was later declared dead at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

Victim’s husband Abdul Matin later filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
