Bangladeshi man dies after being shot by BSF along Thakurgaon border

A Bangladeshi man who was injured in firing by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Thakurgaon border died on Saturday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Uttar Dinajpur district of India’s West Bengal.

The deceased was identified as Asadul Haque, 38, of Idrail village in Pirganj, according to a press release issued by Dinajpur 42 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion.

According to the BGB, BSF personnel from the Chakshibananda camp opened fire on a group of Bangladeshi “smugglers” at around 1:30am, about 1.5km inside India from Border Pillar No 333 under the Chanderhat Border Outpost.

Asadul sustained injuries in the firing. Later, BSF personnel took him to a hospital in Raiganj, where he died while undergoing treatment the following morning.

The BGB also said in the press release that Asadul was an “identified drug smuggler” and was involved in human trafficking.

Several cases had been filed against him with Pirganj Police Station over drug smuggling and human trafficking.

Lt Col Abdullah Al Moin Hasan, commanding officer of BGB 42 Battalion in Dinajpur, said the BSF had not yet officially informed them about the death.

The BGB has called for a flag meeting with the BSF today to discuss the incident, he said, adding that details would be available after the meeting, The Daily Star reports.
