BSF hands over ten rescued Bangladeshis to BGB after Padma boat capsize

India's Border Security Force (BSF) has handed over 10 Bangladeshis to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) following their rescue from the Padma River after a boat carrying 12 passengers capsized in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila on Saturday.

They were handed over to BGB around 10:00pm on Saturday at the Faridpur border following a company commander-level flag meeting between the two border forces.

Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mustafizur Rahman, commanding officer of 53 BGB Battalion, said members of Khandua BSF Camp rescued the 10 Bangladeshis from the Padma after the boat capsized and informed the BGB of the incident.

Following the flag meeting, BSF formally handed over the rescued Bangladeshis to BGB, which later reunited them with their relatives in the presence of local public representatives.

The rescued Bangladeshis were identified as Russel, 26, Ibrahim, 50, Sawdagar, 40, Ibrahim, 60, Sakhina, 45, Nilufa, 35, Tania, 22, her 20-day-old infant, Sanaullah, 9, and Al Amin, 9. All are residents of Jahurpur Bokripara in Narayanpur union under Sadar upazila.

Earlier, around 5:00pm on Saturday, the boat carrying the 12 passengers left Bakherali Ghat for Jahurpur.

About 20 minutes into the journey, the boat capsized amid strong winds and strong currents, according to police and locals.

Patrolling BSF personnel from Khandua Camp rescued 10 passengers alive and took them into Indian territory.

Another passenger, identified as Wasim, 25, managed to swim back to Bangladeshi territory, while Mostafa, 60, remained missing.

Police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene after receiving the news, while BSF subsequently notified BGB of the rescue.
