HC dismisses writ challenging legality of ban on Awami League, affiliate orgs

The High Court has dismissed a writ petition challenging the legality of a government notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organisations.

The court dismissed the petition as “not pressed”.

A bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan passed the order today, Sunday (13 September).

Deputy Attorney General Nur Mohammad Azmi appeared for the state at the hearing, while Advocate Yunus Ali represented the petitioner. Lawyer Nuro Nabi Bulbul was also present at the hearing.

During the hearing, Bulbul told the court that the petitioner, Md Al Amin, was not a member of the Awami League and therefore had no legal authority or right to file such a writ petition.

Md Al Amin, a resident of Sreenagar upazila in Munshiganj, filed the writ petition on September 7.

The petition challenged the legal authority of a notification issued by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs on 12 May 2025 and sought a stay on its effectiveness.

The notification said all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations would remain banned until the trials of their leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal were completed.

The ban covers publications, campaigns through mass media, online platforms and social media, processions, meetings, rallies and conferences, among other activities.
